LONGWOOD STUDENT VETERANS FINANCIAL AID FACT SHEET
(The university’s financial aid office works with students individually to match needs with resources – on campus and off.)
Your LU institutional financial award is calculated via an individual student aid budget, factoring in the following items:
Room & board
Books & supplies
Transportation
Personal expenses
(Additionally, the cost of a laptop is included as a one-time only cost in the student’s first year (freshman or transfer.)
These costs are then used as a budget to determine your TOTAL FINANCIAL NEED for that academic year, subtracting your expected family contribution (from the FAFSA) and any/all Veterans education benefits.
**NOTE: Your book voucher COMES OUT of this total award; it is NOT an additional award.
As most student-veterans are nontraditional and may incur expenses uncommon for traditional students, you may find that your award is not enough. If this is the case, you can request an adjustment to your LU individual award budget. The procedure for requesting additional funding follows.
Write a formal letter requesting that your additional expenses be included in your individual financial aid budget; you’ll need to itemize any expenses not already covered in your current cost of attendance.
Templates for the letter and the itemized expense list are provided on a separate page on this site. The figures and details you'll need for the itemized expense list should reflect actual tuition and fees and estimated room, board, books, supplies, personal expenses, transportation expenses, computer expenses, and any unusual expenses you incur. Estimates for costs incurred by other family members may not be included--with the exception of childcare.
Such requests, if needed, should be made annually, in the fall.
Send this letter and itemized expense request to:
